Pearse Doherty and Leo Varadkar: What Happened?
Varadkar and Sinn Féin’s finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty sparred in the Dáil this afternoon, with personal charges flying.
During Leaders Questions this afternoon, Deputy Doherty chastised the Tánaiste for enjoying a dinner to commemorate Fine Gael’s 10 years in office, while the ESRI warned that fuel poverty in Ireland has reached an all-time high.
Following Minister Varadkar’s remark that Sinn Féin charges €1,000 per dish for dinners hosted in the United States, Deputy Doherty brought up the DPP’s investigation into the Leo’s corruption allegations.
Deputy Doherty was then accused of being prosecuted as a younger man, according to Minister Varadkar.
Doherty stated that he believes that was a cheap shot, but it was a highly personal one that revealed a lot about him and the person’s nature and character.
He further stated that Leo “mistreated and abused a Garda Sochána.” As a result, he was charged. Due of his age at the time, he was found guilty. He was able to avoid being sentenced, but he was nonetheless fined and arrested.
They chose Doherty, and he was charged with a felony, Leo later replied. After then, he was summoned to court.
